Mural

Visual collaboration whiteboard with hundreds of retro templates and AI-assisted facilitation

Overall score
6.6

Overview

Mural is a long-established visual collaboration platform — an infinite canvas with sticky notes, voting, timers, private mode, hundreds of retro templates, AI clustering, summary and sentiment classification, and a Facilitation Superpowers toolkit (Outline, Timer, Voting, Private Mode) refined for over a decade. Best-in-class enterprise posture: SSO, SCIM, SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, GDPR and EU/US data residency.

Best for: Workshop-heavy teams (design, product, agile coaching) that want a polished facilitation canvas with strong retro templates and enterprise-grade controls.

How Mural describes itself

Mural now leads with AI, pitching itself as an AI-powered visual workspace for team collaboration — workshops, retros, design sprints and brainstorms on an infinite canvas. The 2026 messaging pairs Facilitation Superpowers (Outline, Timer, Voting, Private Mode) with Mural AI, which clusters sticky notes, summarises canvases and classifies text by emotional tone.

"AI-powered visual workspace for team collaboration."

Mural targets workshop-led teams — design, product, agile coaching, consulting — that need polished facilitation tooling and enterprise-grade compliance. A free tier exists (3 editable murals), but the meaningful collaboration features and Mural AI sit on Team+ ($9.99/user/mo annual), and SSO/SAML on Business ($17.99/user/mo).

Our take

Mural is the most polished facilitation canvas on the market. Where Miro feels like a Swiss-army knife, Mural feels like a tool a workshop facilitator designed: Private Mode, Outline, Timer and Voting all just work, and the template library is curated for retros and design sprints rather than every possible use case. Enterprise posture is genuinely first-class — SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, SSO, SCIM, EU residency.

The trade-offs are the same as Miro's: no native health checks, no recurring retros, no action carryover, no cross-team rollup, and SSO/SAML gated to the $17.99/user/mo Business tier. Mural AI does clustering, summary and a Classify pass that sorts stickies by emotional tone — useful inside one session, but it doesn't track sentiment across sprints the way a health-check tool does. The June 2026 upgrade to interactive Jira and Azure DevOps work-item cards makes turning stickies into tracked issues cleaner, which is the closest Mural comes to closing the retro loop. Best fit for design and agile-coaching teams that already prize facilitation craft and want compliance baked in. Overkill if you just need a sticky-note retro every two weeks.

Pros

  • + Mature facilitation toolkit — Outline, Timer, Voting, Private Mode — refined over 10+ years
  • + Strong template library with 200+ retro and workshop frames
  • + Best-in-class enterprise posture: SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, GDPR, SSO/SAML, SCIM, EU/US residency
  • + Two-way Jira and Azure DevOps sync turns sticky notes into tracked issues
  • + Polished UX, especially for facilitators running synchronous workshops

Cons

  • Per-seat pricing: a 24-person org pays ~$240/mo on the Team+ tier (annual), well above retro-native tools at that headcount
  • No native health checks, mood tracking or longitudinal team-pulse
  • No recurring retros, action carryover or cross-team rollup — facilitators rebuild structure each sprint
  • AI (clustering, summary, sentiment Classify) helps inside a session but doesn't track trends across retros
  • SSO/SAML gated to Business tier ($17.99/user/mo) — same trap as Miro
